When we think of Fairbanks, Alaska, we think of crisp winter air, vast wilderness, and the unforgettable sight of the Northern Lights dancing overhead. But for those of us who live and breathe dog mushing, Fairbanks is more than just a breathtaking destination—it’s a way of life. As mushers and caretakers of a hardworking Iditarod racing team, we’ve built our lives around the love of Alaskan Huskies, and we can’t wait to share that experience with you.
If you’ve ever dreamed of meeting real sled dogs, standing on the sled runners, or experiencing the thrill of a team in motion, Fairbanks is the place to do it. Whether you visit in the snowy winter, the golden autumn, or the lush green summer, our dogs are always ready to run, explore, and connect with new friends.
Meeting the Alaskan Huskies
Here at Black Spruce Dog Sledding, our sled dogs aren’t just pets—they’re athletes, teammates, and family members. Unlike the fluffy Siberian Huskies you might imagine, Alaskan Huskies are a unique, purpose-bred mix of dogs selected for their endurance, strength, intelligence, and love of running. They may have different coat colors, ear shapes, or eye colors, but one thing remains the same: their aptitude in harness.
Spending time with these dogs is an unforgettable experience. They greet visitors with excited barks, eager tail wags, and an infectious energy that’s impossible to resist. Whether they’re bounding toward you for belly rubs or settling into their harnesses before a run, they are pure joy in motion. And once you see them in action, you’ll understand why we’ve dedicated our lives to working with these incredible animals.
The Black Spruce Dog Sledding Experience
For any husky lover visiting Fairbanks, a trip to Black Spruce Dog Sledding is an absolute must. As experienced Iditarod racers, we know these dogs inside and out, and we love sharing that connection with our guests through hands-on experiences. Our Scenic Day Mushing Tour isn’t just about sitting back for a ride—it’s about stepping into the world of dog mushing.
When you visit, you won’t just watch from the sidelines. You’ll be right there with us, learning how to harness and hook up the team, getting to know each dog by name, and feeling their excitement as they prepare to run. And when you step onto the sled runners, the moment those huskies take off, you’ll understand why we do what we do—there’s nothing like the quiet rush of gliding across fresh snow, powered by a team of incredible canine athletes.
In the Sled Dog Safari Tour, offered June through November, you’ll see firsthand how we train these world-class athletes in the off-season. After meeting our pack of Alaskan Huskies, you’ll help harness and hook them up for a thrilling sled dog ride—on wheels! Our comfortable 5-passenger vehicle lets you experience the power and energy of a real racing team as they train on dirt trails, just like they do to prepare for 1,000-mile races. Along the way, we’ll stop for photos, watch the dogs cool off in their pools, and introduce you to some of our essential winter mushing gear. We wrap up this unique tour with one of our favorite parts—puppy time!
In the summer, our Husky Hiking Tour offers a completely different but equally unforgettable experience. Instead of pulling a sled, our dogs get to do what they love—explore the trails, sniff out adventure, and run free alongside you through the Alaskan wilderness. Seeing their energy and enthusiasm, whether on snow or dirt, reminds us every day just how special these dogs truly are.
The Bond Between Mushers and Dogs
Dog sledding isn’t just about racing—it’s about partnership. Our huskies aren’t just strong runners; they’re loyal teammates who trust us as much as we trust them. Every dog has a unique personality, from the confident lead dogs to the pack-oriented wheel dogs.
As Iditarod mushers, we care for these dogs like family. Their nutrition, training, and health are our top priorities, and everything we do is centered around their well-being and happiness. That’s what makes visiting Black Spruce Dog Sledding such a special experience—you’ll see firsthand the love, respect, and teamwork that fuels our sport.

When you visit, we’ll share stories from the trail—crossing frozen rivers, battling Arctic storms, and navigating the rugged wilderness with only our team for company. It’s an adventure unlike any other, built on trust, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between mushers and their dogs.
Taking a Piece of Fairbanks Home
For many visitors, one tour with us just isn’t enough. That’s why we offer a Dog Sponsorship Program, where you can stay connected to a specific husky, following their training and racing journey throughout the year. Sponsoring a dog is a special way to support our team and be part of the adventure—even from afar.
