Dear Marilyn,
It’s me, Owl, writing to you as I always have, to share all the latest news from the trail. Even though you’re no longer with us, I wanted to send you this letter, because I know you’d still love to hear about how things are going.
This season, I’ve been finding joy in a new role. I’ve retired from the serious race team and now spend my days training the yearlings alongside Tolvi, Robin, Knox, and Frito. My place is at the back of the team, where I can infuse everyone with energy and enthusiasm. It’s a good spot for me because I get to encourage the younger dogs and remind them just how much they’re capable of. Mom says I’m a great role model for the other small females on the team, showing them what amazing feats they’ll be able to accomplish in their lives. I love that part of my job—it makes me feel proud to share my experience with the next generation.
There’s something else new about me this season: I’m finally starting to put on weight and eat more consistently! Mom and Dad have been hoping for this for years, and now that I’m older, I seem to have figured it out. The handlers are still learning how to assess body weight and adjust feedings, so I’ve quickly become one of the fattest—oops, I mean fluffiest—dogs in the yard. Don’t worry, though; I’m not slowing down one bit. My extra reserves just mean I’m more prepared for all those chilly winter days!
But this letter isn’t just about me. I want to take some time to remember you. Mom and Dad often say that without you, the kennel’s sponsorship program might never have existed. You were the one who believed in us when the idea was still just a seed, and your advice, encouragement, and support helped it grow into something truly special.
You were always so generous, not just with me, but with so many other sled dogs and kennels. Your love for our sport and your kindness toward every dog and musher you met left a lasting mark on all of us. Mom and Dad say that Marilyn’s spirit will always be part of Black Spruce Dog Sledding, and I know they’re right.
In your honor, I’ve retired from the sponsorship program. You were my one and only sponsor for my entire life, and that’s how it will always stay. Mom and Dad say that no one else could ever take your place, and I agree. Instead, they plan to share this letter with others, hoping it might inspire someone like you—a kindred spirit who loves dogs, adventure, and the thrill of the trail.
This season, as we glide across snowy trails and tackle each new challenge, I carry you with me in my heart. Whether I’m resting on my straw under a starry Alaskan sky or pulling strong on a tough run, I remember how much you believed in me and my teammates. That belief means the world, and it drives me to give my all every single day.
Thank you, Marilyn, for everything. For your love, your support, and the way you saw the best in all of us. You were my sponsor, my friend, and my biggest cheerleader, and I’ll always run with your memory close.
Sending you love, tail wags, and a grateful howl,
Owl
